Local University of Alabama Students awarded over $71,000 in scholarships

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Graduating from high school can be an extremely exciting and yet scary time for students. One of the most important decisions students are faced with is making the choice of post-secondary education. When making this difficult decision, cost of attendance is a huge factor. Scholarships are a way of offsetting some of the high prices of attending college. This year, the Harry I. Brown Sr. and Margaret W. Brown Endowed Scholarship awarded 16 high school seniors with $71,600.

On Thursday, the University of Alabama National Alumni Association’s South Talladega County Chapter held a scholarship banquet at Harvey’s on Noble for graduating seniors attending the University of Alabama from Sylacauga, Childersburg, B.B. Comer, Fayetteville, and Winterboro High School.

Sixteen students were awarded scholarships: Byron Manley, Jacob Chance, Chandler Deerman, Caitlyn McTier, Russell Fornwalt, Virginia Higginbotham, Gregory Keeton, Lizabeth Ogletree, Hannah Pittman, Tommy Marlowe, Chase Merkel, Ally Lewis, Allexus Phillips, Hannah Hammonds, Emily Machen, and Audrey Valentine.

“We’ve never had a recruiting class like this,” said Harry Brown Jr., “Of our 16 scholars, 13 have accepted four-year scholarships. This is truly the most outstanding class we have ever experienced.”

Harry Brown Sr. established the scholarship in 1996 to help support south Talladega county students attending the University of Alabama because of his concern with education in Alabama. Brown graduated from the University in 1948 with a degree in Commerce and Business Administration.

In April 1996, in Brown’s own words he said, “I plan to add to this fund annually. It’s not as much as I would like, but hopefully in a few years it will be a fairly good scholarship.” When he made that statement, the scholarship was only giving away a few hundred dollars to students. Now, 20 years later, the scholarship awards tens of thousands of dollars to graduates every year. In its 20 years existence, the scholarship has honored 149 students with $354,326.

Not only does the generosity of Harry Brown Sr. allow these local students to receive the great funds to attend, but for every Alabama affinity tag that is purchased for a car, proceeds are sent back to chapters local fund which has grown to more than $926,811. The University of Alabama also helps by matching a portion of the money raised yearly by the local chapter.
