Local football teams wrap-up regular season, look to playoffs

SHARE NOW

TALLADEGA COUNTY, Ala. – While several local high schools wrapped up regular season play, regionally some teams are heading to the first round of playoffs this week.

The Aggies head to the playoffs
The Sylacauga Aggies stayed on the right track last Fruday night with a huge 42-28 victory over Calera. Behind a great ground attack featuring Tashun Looney, SHS was able to rest star running back Alex Thomaston who is still nursing an ankle injury. More importantly, Coach Matt Griffith was able to see the strengths and weaknesses of Calera. After all, the Eagles host the Aggies in the first round of the 5A playoffs this Friday.

Tigers and Cougars battle in cat fight
Some may think that Childersburg and Coosa Central played touch football without any hands last Friday night. The Tigers ended the year on a high note with a 82-64 victory.

— Are you serious? That’s more like a basketball score! —

“We just got in a scoring groove. I’m just glad for the kids because they were excited and it gives them something to build on for next year,” said Coach Beverly. The Tigers end the season with a 3-7 record.

B.B. Comer notches first victory of the season
The B.B. Comer Tigers came away with its first win of the 2016 season Friday night at Farmlinks Field — a 22-20 win over the Fayetteville Wolves. The Tigers scampered on the ground all night behind a 227-yard rushing performance by senior quarterback Houston Ford. The Wolves head coach John Limbaugh said, “we had too many injuries on defense and suspensions that we just couldn’t stop them when we needed to.”

The Wolves battled back though after trailing 14-0 at the half and cut it to two only to drop one and finish the season at 3-7. The Tigers end 2016 with a 1-9 record.

Aggies travel in First Round
Head Coach Matt Griffith will take a talented and hungry Sylacauga Aggie football team to Calera Friday night. SHS hopes to have the same result as it did last Friday night at Legion Stadium. It’s the 8-2 Aggies taking on the 7-3 Eagles and you can follow the action all the way on the Yea!106.5 & WYEA!1290 High School Football Game of the Week starting at 6:45 p.m.

Also, Winterboro will travel to Isabella in the 1A first round.
