SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga Chamber of Commerce held its 2016 awards luncheon on Monday. Many local businessmen and women, along with members of the community, joined together at the J. Craig Smith Community Center to support the Chamber’s annual appreciation to businesses who demonstrate service, commitment, and integrity within the community.

After opening remarks and a meal, attendees were given the opportunity to hear a speech from the Chief Executive Officer of the Business Council of Alabama, William “Billy” Canary. Canary told SylacaugaNews.com that it was honor to come speak to the Chamber of Commerce. He said members of the Chamber are people he considers heroes inside the community.

In his speech, Canary addressed the importance of economic development and effective job creation through infrastructure, right to work, quality of healthcare, and education reform, and said he sees those four qualities in the Sylacauga Chamber. “If you look around this room today, all four of those areas are well represented, and all integrate together in this chamber, because at the end of the day it produces a four letter word: jobs.”

After Canary’s speech, Marketing Director of the Sylacauga Chamber of Commerce Laura Strickland presented the Cornerstone and Non-Profit awards. The Non-Profit Award was presented to The ARC of South Talladega County. Director of ARC Beverly White said it was an honor to to be recognized as a no-profit that does very positive things in the community.

The Cornerstone Award is presented to a business that has been in the community for at least five years. This year’s winner was Piggly Wiggly. ‘The Pig’ has two locations in Sylacauga and is owned and operated by SCVS Inc.

The final award of the day, the Pillar of the Community Award, was presented by Sylacauga Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Mike Landers. Landers said the award goes to organizations that go above and beyond what they are called to do in the community. This year’s inaugural award was presented to Coosa Valley Medical Center, and accepted by Chief Executive Officer, Glenn Sisk.

“The amount of projects that Coosa Valley Medial Center partners with in the community just defines who they are and the depth of customer service they have,” said Landers.

“We’re honored and humbled,” stated Sisk “We value the relationship with the chamber, and on behalf of our team, we’re moved by the award.”

After the event, Landers told SylacaugaNews.com all members of the chamber are great partners. But today, it was about honoring businesses that have done more than what has been asked of them.

“These are folks that take that extra steps, like ARC, CVMC, and Piggly Wiggly, and we want to congratulate them in a special way, and its an opportunity for us to come together and say thank you.”

During the awards luncheon, Linda Hardy of Magnolias was introduced as the new President of the Sylacauga Chamber of Commerce. Doug Norton of Huddle House, Donna Bowden of Bowden Oil Co., and Albia Steers of State Farm Insurance were introduced as new board members.
