SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Facilities are on the rise for Sylacauga Parks and Recreation controlled facilities.

The gymnasium at Sylacauga’s J. Craig Smith Community Center now has a brand new gym floor. The floor features a grey base with red and black lines creating a horizontal and vertical basketball courts.

The older brown floor that was removed was the original floor for the community center, and according to Sylacauga Parks and Recreation Director Jim Armstrong, it was just time for a new floor.

“This one one of the best things we’ve had happen to us in a long while,” said Armstrong. “We just needed this, and it was time for a new floor.”

Armstrong also said the floor was becoming a safety hazard as it was pulling away from the walls and doors around the entire gymnasium.

The gym also features new scoreboards and new paint on the walls. “We installed the new scoreboards and repainted,” Armstrong said. “Everything looks fresh and new.”

Parks and Recreation facilities are seeing upgrades throughout the city. The Donald Comer Jr. Recreation Complex has seen electrical, lighting and scoreboard upgrades, and the city tennis courts have also undergone recent renovation.

When we have good facilities it helps the city because recreation is one of the key factors people look at when choosing to move to a new location.

“Everything we have done we have desperately needed,” Armstrong said. He went on to explain the upgrades impact for more than recreational activities. The director explained the many uses for the J. Craig Smith Community Center which includes hosting banquets and elections.

Parks and Rec. has already began to use the new floor as youth basketball has just tipped off its season in 2019.
