SYLACAUGA, Ala.- It feels like not a day goes by without the announcement of new industry, shopping centers, and more jobs possibly coming to Sylacauga.

Recently, there was an official ground-breaking ceremony for the new Marble City Square retail shopping center. At the ceremony, Jamey Flegal, a development partner with Hutton Team LLC, said more than 200 jobs will be created by the development once stores begin to open in the spring of 2018.

Olllie’s Bargain Outlet, which held its grand-opening in early June, has given many people jobs from Sylacauga and the surrounding areas. Other businesses like Pizza and Pint and Trailwares have also brought jobs to the community.

Thursday afternoon, at the the Sylacauga City Council meeting, Calvin Miller, who is the Executive Director of the Talladega Co. Development Authority, announced there are more jobs to come.

Miller came to the council asking for a 10-year tax abatement for Fleetwood Metal Industries, a parts supplier for Honda, for the completion of a 60,000 sq. ft. facility which will house the manufacturing of automotive parts for Honda.

In a 5-0 vote, the council awarded the tax abatement which Miller explained as protocol for industry in Sylacauga and incentive for others to bring their industry to Sylacauga.

This project is an expansion of what Fleetwood Metal is already doing in Sylacauga. The Canadian-based company already has a plant in the Sylacauga Industrial Park that opened in 2005. Fleetwood Metal has three other facilities located across the northern border of the U.S.

The most significant aspect of Fleetwood Metal’s expansion is the jobs it will bring. Although the council agenda for Thursday stated the new facility will bring 30 new jobs to Sylacauga, Miller threw around much larger numbers. In his speech to the council at the work session that preceded the official council meeting, Miller explained there is an opportunity for 60-70 jobs when all is said and done.
