Coosa Valley Electric Cooperative taking donations for Hurricane Michael relief

SHARE NOW

TALLADEGA, Ala. – Coosa Valley Electric Cooperative is asking for donations to provide relief for those who have been affected by Hurricane Michael.

Last week, CVEC joined cooperatives throughout the state to send some 160 lineworkers to southern Alabama and the Florida Panhandle to help those cooperatives rebuild its systems. The damage caused by Michael is so widespread and extensive that individual utilities don’t have enough workers on hand to restore services in a timely manner. In situations like this, the Alabama Rural Electric Association of Cooperatives coordinates with other similar statewide associations to organize additional assistance.

“The idea for this came from several of our employees who made a trip to deliver supplies to that area over the weekend,” said Leland Fuller, CVEC general manager. “They saw firsthand the devastation and dire need for even the most basic items. We completely support it.”

Requested donation items include individual fruit juices, bottled water, Clorox clean up, #10 cans of fruits and vegetables, gallons of Clorox, Clorox wipes, canned meat spreads, spam, Vienna sausage, canned tuna and chicken, peanut butter, money for bread to be purchased, peanut butter crackers cheese crackers, crackers, individual size chip bags, powdered milk, granola bars, casserole size aluminum pans, breakfast bars, pop tarts, paper towels, toilet paper, baby wipes, feminine products, net laundry bags, nursery water, diapers, Enfamil or Similac powder baby formula, plastic forks and spoons, paper plates, paper towels, cat and dog food, blankets, deodorant,, bug spray, sheets, sleeping bags, EZ Up canopies, lawn chairs, premixed gas for chain saws, 18 inch chain saw blades, and flashlights with batteries. You may also donate $25 Visa gift cards, which can be used to purchase other necessary items.

Those wishing to contribute can drop off donations at the Cooperative office, at 69220 Al. Hwy. 77, Talladega, daily from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. this week. The last donations must be dropped off by noon, Friday, Oct. 19. Volunteers plan to deliver the supplies to the Mexico Beach and Port Saint Joe areas of Florida on Saturday, Oct. 20.

Coosa Valley Electric, which serves nearly 17,000 consumers in Talladega, St. Clair, Shelby, Clay, Etowah and Calhoun counties, is a Touchstone Energy cooperative. Nationwide, around 1,000 cooperatives provide power to rural America, and approximately 800 of those operate under the Touchstone Energy umbrella.
