Childersburg Council approves nearly $4.6 million budget, accepts resignation of Parks & Rec Director

CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – The Childersburg City Council gave final approval to its 2017 budget on Tuesday night, unanimously accepting Mayor Ken Wesson’s plan to spend $4,598,452 with projected revenues of $4,615,400 with a surplus of $16,948.

The spending plan calls for a 2.5-percent pay increase for city employees effective February 1, 2017. There will also be a one-time longevity bonus based on years of service:

Less that 5 years = $100
5 to 10 years = $150
10+ years = $200

In other business, the council accepted the resignation of Parks & Recreation Director Howard Smith effective December 31, 2016. After five years of leading the recreation department, Smith will return to the Childersburg Water Works, Sewer, and Gas Board.

The Council approved Resolution 2016-23, which accepts the donation of 23 acres of property located off Highway 76 near the Water Works Plant from the Gilliland family.

Several appointments were approved by the Council:

Bruce Hunt to the Industrial Development Board (Expiring 12/8/2021)
Dr. Duncan Roy to the Industrial Development Board (Expiring 12/08/2021)
Steve Cain to the Historical Preservation Commission (Expiring 9/30/2019)
Hillary Downs the the Parks & Recreation Board (Expiring 9/21/2020)

Approval was given to several personnel matters: hiring Shirley Sheppard as Municipal Court Magistrate, status change of Michael Barnett to part-time temporary with the fire department, hiring Gabe Major as firefighter/paramedic full-time/permanent, and incorporating building inspector duties into the fire chief’s role at $7,200 per year.

Also approved were travel expenses for Police Chief Rick McClelland to attend a Winter Conference in Montgomery January 23-26, destruction of old administrative records by Shred-It on site at a cost of approximately $739, and invoices in the amount of $192,573.50.
