SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Childersburg City Council met Tuesday night, Nov. 20, at 6:00 p.m. with the following agenda items for action:

The Council approved Resolution 2018-30: the fiscal year 2019 Operating Budget. In the budget, both the Childersburg Police Department and the Senior Center employees will receive step raises. All other city employees will receive a 2.5 percent raise.

The budget projects $4,668,300 in revenue, $4,640,786 in expenditures, and a surplus of $27,514.

Also approved was the appointment of George Sims as Public Defender for Municipal Court, effective Jan. 9, 2019, at a pay rate of $1,000 per month.

The Council gave approval for Officer Michael Price to attend Criminal Investigator Seminar in Birmingham Dec. 3 through Dec. 7 with a $450 registration, plus travel/per diem.

Invoice payment was approved in the amount of $207,660.45.

During the Town Hall portion of the meeting, Mayor Ken Wesson introduced the newest Childersburg Police Officers, Christian White, and Aaron Lindow. The pair graduated from the Police Academy last week. Wesson said that new officers, as well as a commitment to raising the rate of pay and benefits, is part of a Council backed plan to make Childersburg the safest city in Talladega County, and eventually the safest in the state.

Tom Roberts of the Greater Coosa Valley Chamber reminded of the “Childersburg Shopping Spree” program that runs through the end of November, “We want to create a mindset of remembering to shop locally in support of the things that matter to the community. Whatever you spend money on in Childersburg, save the receipt and turn it in to the Chamber by 2:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30. We are going to reward eight shoppers with gift cards for the holidays.”

The next regular scheduled meeting will be held Dec. 4, 2018 at 6:00 p.m.
