SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Police are investigating an early morning shooting at AOC Food Mart on Highway 21 North in Sylacauga.
A 911 call at 6:07 a.m. advised the dispatcher that the clerk was bleeding but still breathing. Multiple SPD units, officers, and investigators are at the scene, and the business is closed for the day.
Sylacauga Police Chief Kelley Johnson told SylacaugaNews.com the clerk and the shooter were the only two individuals in the store at the time of the shooting. He said officers do not know if the shooter fled on foot or in a car but has not yet been taken into custody.
The Sylacauga Police Department responds to shots fired almost nightly according to Johnson. However, the last assault took place earlier this month when 17-year-old Casey Kizer was murdered.
Jonhson told SylacaugaNews.com reporters that this was not related to a robbery but to “other circumstances.”
UPDATED: 2:00 p.m.
Johnson confirmed the victim, 34-year-old Melissa Joy McDonald, has died. She was pronounced dead at Coosa Valley Medical Center. The investigation is still underway at this time.
