American Legion Post 45 to host proper flag retirement ceremony on Flag Day

SHARE NOW

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – In honor of Flag Day on June 14, the American Legion Post 45 and Vietnam Veterans of America chapter 945 are hosting the second annual Flag Retirement Ceremony.

The American Legion started this tradition in 2017, and is an event the members plan on continuing each year from now on.

“If there are flags that are no longer usable, we would prefer to retire them properly so people don’t just trash them,” said Jon Hall. Hall is the President of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 945. “There is a procedure for doing that, and that’s what we love to do. We don’t dispose of or destroy the flags, we retire them.”

If you have a flag that is faded, tattered, or no longer serviceable, you can bring it by the American Legion building or leave it on the back porch. The American Legion will retire them properly.

The ceremony will begin at 5:00 p.m. on June 14 at the American Legion Hall at 1 S. Hammett Ave. in Sylacauga. The ceremony will last 45 minutes. Everyone is invited to attend.
