MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Every three years the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) reclassifies schools into seven divisions and regions inside of those divisions according to change in student population. On Thursday, the AHSAA announced the changes for 2018-2020.

Notable changes have taken place that affect local teams. In the 5A classification, Sylacauga High School has moved from 5A Region 4 to 5A Region 5. For the next three years, Sylacauga will face off Center Point, Clay Central, Moody, Mortimer Jordan, Munford, Saint Clair County, and Springville.

While Sylacauga stayed in 5A, some notable rivals did not. For the first time in a while, the Talladega High School Tigers will be in a different region and classification. Talladega  will move down to 4A and participate in region 4. The Lincoln Golden Bears will also move down one classification from 5A to 4A. The Golden Bears will join Talladega in Region 4. The Tigers and Golden Bears will join Childersburg, Elmore County, Handley, Holtville, and Leeds in the region.

Fayetteville High School will stay put in the 2A ranks. Positioned in Region 4, Fayetteville wis joined by Central Coosa, Horseshoe Bend, LaFayette, Reeltown, Thorsby, and Vincent.

The Winterboro Bulldogs will remain in 1A. Joined by Talladega County Central, the Bulldogs are accompanied by Appalachain, Donoho, Ragland, Spring Garden, and Victory Christian.
