[VIDEO] Abandoned home catches fire for second time in Sylacauga

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Monday afternoon the Sylacauga Fire Department was called to a house fire at 203 Avondale Ave. SFD arrived to the scene in a matter of minutes but not before a significant amount of damage was done to the  abandoned home.

Neighbor Rodney Golden told SylacaugaNews.com the front of the home was completely engulfed in flames when the fire department arrived. He said he had to move his truck fearing the fire would spread to his property and set his vehicle ablaze.

Lieutenant Chris Wallis and his men were able to control the house fire in less than 10 minutes. “When we arrived it was fully involved,” said Wallis. “We made an interior attack, and got it put out pretty quick.”

Wallis said no one was in the home during the fire and no one was injured while putting out the blaze. Wallis said the cause of the fire is unknown at this time and details will be released at a later date.

Golden said this is not the first time SFD has been called to the abandoned home. Golden said he had to make the 911 call to the fire department in the past after arriving home from the grocery store and seeing the home, once again, engulfed in flames.

So how does an abandoned home keep catching on fire?

Golden said squatters are a frequent problem at the vacant home. He said he sees people coming and going from the home often and has been forced to make calls to the police. Golden said he would not be surprised if there was a correlation between squatters and the house fires.
