SYLACAUGA, Ala. – February marks a celebration month for Career and Technical Education. To celebrate National Career and Technical Education Month, the Alabama Career and Technical Education Department is visiting fourteen outstanding CTE programs across the state. Sylacauga High School’s Business Management and Administration program was included in this tour, only being one of two Business Departments recognized state-wide.

On Friday, Feb. 17, Alabama Career and Technical Education Director Dr. Phillip Cleveland, other state officials, and community leaders visited Sylacauga High School. Guests were brought on a full tour of Sylacauga High School’s Career and Technical Education programs including its health science, human services, and engineering laboratories. After visiting these classrooms, guests visited the Sylacauga High School Business Department for an in-depth presentation with current students.

Led by teachers Allyson Craddock, Tyler Laye, and Pamela McTier, the Sylacauga High School Business Department has seen more than ten years of continuous success. Business courses offer students a wide array of career exploration, real-world experience, community involvement, and character development.

“It was a great honor to be selected as one of the 14 best programs in the state and a testament to the emphasis that our community places on workforce development,” said Sylacauga City Schools Director of Career and Technical Education Dr. Jon Segars.

Currently, eleven courses are offered in the business program, ranging from Banking and Finance to Multimedia Design. Students have the opportunity become certified experts in industry standard programs like Microsoft Excel and Adobe Photoshop. Students also have the opportunity to perform a variety of tasks for the community like designing brochures and websites for businesses and writing, filming, and editing public service announcements.

The Business Management and Administration program provides all of its students with a wide range of real-world experience. Students have the opportunity to work at a Heritage South Credit Union branch inside of the school, learn coding and build objects using a 3D printer, film, edit, and produce a daily newscast aired inside the school, design the school newspaper and yearbook, and more.

An integral part of the Business Management and Administration program is its student organization, Future Business Leaders of America. Sylacauga FBLA has a lengthy history as an exemplary FBLA chapter not only at the state level, but also at the national level. Sylacauga FBLA has been named Alabama FBLA’s Most Outstanding Chapter eleven of the past twelve years and has had students win national-level awards each year for the past ten years.
