SHARE NOW

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Have you ever wondered what happens in the day of the life of the Sylacauga Mayor Jim Heigl? SylacaugaNews.com has the answer. We recently sat down with Jim Heigl to get a look into a day in his life.

So, how does Heigl begin his day? Heigl’s usual day starts with a trip to local restaurants to get coffee and visit with friends, supporters, and fellow Veterans. Following coffee in the morning, Heigl arrives at his office in city hall at eight. Upon arrival, Heigl checks his schedule for events or appointments later in the day. He then checks his emails for updates from various city departments.

After settling in each morning, Heigl spends a decent amount of time in City Clerk office, as this office essentially acts as the “command center” for the City of Sylacauga. Following this, Heigl often returns to his office to take phone calls and record constituent complaints. Heigl also spends a great deal of time finding ordinances that need to updated to 2017 standards.

It is not uncommon for Heigl to be out of his office during the day. He visits areas in the city that residents voice concerns about to determine the appropriate actions that should be taken. Heigl also visits various city departments and properties, such as the Sylacauga Animal Shelter and Sylacauga Police and Fire Departments.

One intriguing location Heigl spends a great deal of time at is the courthouse. Heigl is often present in support of business developers awaiting court approval for items like rezoning and construction approvals for the City of Sylacauga.

Regardless of his location during the day, Heigl says he is constantly reminded of the oath he took to serve the City of Sylacauga and its residents. Heigl is currently working toward strong litter ordinances for the City of Sylacauga. When asked why he chooses to focus on litter ordinances, Heigl says people are always looking at Sylacauga.

“We never know when people are looking at us. They may be out there right now; they may be out there next month. We don’t know.”

In addition to litter ordinances, Heigl spends time throughout his day working towards other projects for the City of Sylacauga, like the resurfacing on Fort Williams Street in downtown Sylacauga.

Following a day at work, Heigl says he winds down by catching up on the news, often by reading the newspaper. Heigl also says he enjoys just getting out and walking the streets of Sylacauga to see citizens, merchants, and the community as a whole.

Other usual events in the life of Sylacauga Mayor Jim Heigl but not necessarily everyday occurrences are city staff meetings the first Monday of each month, a weekly Veterans breakfast at the American Legion, Chamber of Commerce meetings, and city board meetings.

In short, a day in the life of Sylacauga Mayor Jim Heigl consists of serving the people of Sylacauga.
