[WARNING] Drivers should be prepared for weekend police roadblocks in Harpersville

HARPERSVILLE, Ala. – The Harpersville Police Dept. has sent out a warning to drivers via social media.

This weekend, Sept. 29 – Oct. 1, HPD will be setting up various roadblocks inside of the city limits to help promote safety. HPD has coined the roadblocks as “Traffic  Safety Checkpoints.”

According to the Facebook Post, officers will be looking for valid driver’s license, registration, proof of insurance, and properly functioning equipment such as brakes and taillights.

SylacaugaNews.com spoke to HPD Lt. Diane McCain. She explained these traffic stops are not unusual for her department, but also believes HPD could do more to help ensure safety. “We do these as often as we can, but we do not do them as often as we should,” she explained. “Our main priority in these safety checks are to get people off the road who do not belong on the road. These are the people who generally cause the most accidents and endanger the most people.”

Notification of the traffic stops are very important to HPD. The department has a policy of warning citizens well in advance before launching traffic stops. “We want our citizens to be aware of what their police department is doing,” she said. “We don’t want there to be any surprises.”

Although McCain would not give away specific locations for the traffic stops, Hwy. 280 may be a prime checkpoint on Saturday while many are driving back home from football games in both Tuscaloosa and Auburn, perhaps after a few drinks. “We want our citizens in Harpersville and all over the state to be very mindful of all laws, but especially laws dealing with alcohol. We are going to be out there this weekend and we are going to enforce the law fairly,” McCain said.
