ALDOT preparing for weekend holiday travel

SHARE NOW

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – With the upcoming holiday weekend, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is encouraging Alabamians to travel safely. Fatalities on Alabama roadways are up more than 25% when compared to last year’s totals. Approximately 60% of the 646 total traffic-related fatalities have occurred because drivers and/or passengers have not worn seat belts. For this reason, ALDOT is urging all Alabama drivers and passengers wear seatbelts.

Allison Green, Drive Safe Alabama Coordinator with ALDOT, says “One of the best gifts you can give yourself and your loved ones this year is to buckle up every time you get into a vehicle. Get started on your New Year’s resolutions early and make wearing a seat belt a daily habit before 2017 arrives.”

In addition to encouraging safe travel, ALDOT is taking steps to reduce travel times. Effective at noon on Friday, December 23, through midnight on Monday, December 26, ALDOT will have no temporary lane closures related to construction or maintenance on Alabama interstates. Construction and/or maintenance will then be resumed until noon on Friday, December 30, through midnight on Monday, January 2, where ALDOT will again refrain from closing lanes for New Year’s holiday festivities.
