Tropical Storm Cindy makes its way into Alabama; weather already affecting roads in Central Alabama

SHARE NOW

Sylacauga, AL – Tropical Storm Cindy is currently making its way into Alabama as the state is currently under a State of Emergency declared by Gov. Kay Ivey.

The gulf coast is expecting 6 to 9 inches of rain with some isolated areas expecting higher amounts of 12 inches. But how will the tropical storm affect Sylacauga and the surrounding areas?

Expect rain and a lot of it. Thunderstorms will be prevalent after 1 p.m., and the chance of rain will not drop below 60% over the next few days.  New rainfall amounts could reach 1 inch, but with the already saturated ground, this could be an issue.

The City of Sylacauga is preparing for the worst case scenario, which Mayor Jim Heigl said is flash flooding and downed trees and power lines when he spoke at Tuesday night’s city council meeting. City emergency departments will be on stand-by during the duration of the storm. “The street department will be very helpful in this situation,” explained Heigl. “If flooding does occur we could see trees coming down, and the street department will be ready to get things cleaned up.” Wind may also be an issue. It is expected to come out of the east at 10 to 15 mph.

Wet roads have already caused issues for drivers. At 10:41 Wednesday morning, Sylacauga police and fire departments were called to an accident on Coaling Rd., just passed Pinecrest Elementary. When SylacaugaNews.com arrived on the scene, it learned that a mother and two children were involved in a single vehicle accident with no injuries. The family’s red SUV left the road and hit a tree. Police on the scene said the family was transported to Coosa Valley Medical Center for precautionary reasons.

Tomorrow, expect rain and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. The chance of precipitation is 80%.
