Sylacauga’s Tank Wright to be honored at World Series Wednesday night

SHARE NOW

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – A Nichols-Lawson Middle School student will be recognized tonight during game two of the World Series in Los Angeles, California.

In February, NLMS students, along with students across the country, wrote and submitted stories about overcoming obstacles and breaking barriers in the Scholastic Breaking Barriers Contest. Students were required to write the essay following a short unit covering Major League Baseball’s first African-American baseball player, Jackie Robinson, and the values he used to overcome barriers in his life and career. In the students’ essays, they had to explain how they used the values Robinson used in his career to overcome a barrier in their own lives.

NLMS’s very own Tank Wright won the national competition after writing a heart-breaking story on losing his father at a very young age to cancer. You can read that story by clicking here.

After winning the competition, he was presented an award by Jackie Robinson’s daughter, Sharon Robinson, at NLMS. Tank was awarded prizes that included a laptop for himself and his teacher Emily McLain, and tickets to a World Series game. His prizes have a total value of $7,650.

On the day Tank spoke to SylacaugaNews.com on winning the national essay competition in April, he said he had one destination in mind for attending a Wold Series game. That destination was Dodger Stadium. Tonight, Tank’s wish will be granted and a dream will come to life as he will be in attendance when the National League Champion Los Angeles Dodgers host the American League Champion Houston Astros in Game 2 of Major League Baseball’s 2017 Fall Classic at 7:00 on your local Fox Affiliate.
