SYLACAUGA, Ala. – A Sylacauga teen was killed in a single vehicle accident early Wednesday morning just outside of the Sylacauga city limit sign on Old Birmingham Hwy.

According to friends visiting the scene Wednesday morning, 17-year old Chance Fields was traveling southeast toward Sylacauga when his 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche left the road at a high rate of speed, clipped a telephone pole, and landed overturned in a ditch. Alabama State Tooper Chuck Daniel said his car was the only one involved in the wreck.

Fields’ aunt, Monica Kelley, said police told her the vehicle rolled approximately seven times before coming to a halt in the ditch.

Daniel said Fields, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle and taken to Coosa Valley Medical Center where he later died.

Many in the community are saddened over Fields’ death. Family friend Lisa Dobbs told SylacaugaNews.com his Facebook page is filled with posts expressing grief over his death. “He was a well liked young man and friends with a lot of kids including my own,” said Dobbs. “It’s just not real to me or to a lot of the people that knew him.”

“Chance Fields was like many young country Alabama boys. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, mud riding, and hanging out with his friends. He was very kind and generous to everyone he met. He loved to laugh and joke around. Chance was an only child and he loved his mom more than anything in this world. Chance would give the shirt right off his back to help a stranger in need,” said Kelley.

Family members have set up a GoFundMe account for support. They are asking people in the community to give what they can and say any donation will be greatly appreciated. To give to the Chance Fields Memorial Fund click here.
