SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga Chamber of Commerce has recognized the importance of a quality education. Later this month, a collaborative effort between the Sylacauga City Schools and the Talladega County Board of Education will strive to develop partnerships between business and education.

The second annual ‘Lunch and Learn’ expo will be held Thursday, Jan. 26 at the Sylacauga Board of Education.

The educational-inspired event will feature programs and organizations within Sylacauga City Schools and Talladega County Schools. Members of the community are encouraged to attend and learn more about both of the school systems in the area.

In the past, ‘Lunch and Learn’ focused on Chamber members by creating a business expo environment. This particular program’s theme is the ‘State of the Schools Address.’ Both systems have the opportunity to bring a variety of groups from elementary to high school to give the public a glance into local schools.

Laura Strickland, marketing director at the Sylacauga Chamber of Commerce, said the idea of ‘Lunch and Learn’ has been around for a while. Other chambers within the state use a similar program to strengthen bonds between community, business, and education through a networking opportunity.

Sylacauga City Schools Superintendent Dr. Todd Freeman and Talladega County Schools Superintendent Dr. Suzanne Lacey are leading the charge of deciding which groups within local schools will be represented and presenting later this month. Members from the two systems are expected to discuss insights of providing a quality education for students with the goal of preparing them to be productive citizens. The event will mainly focus on the positives within each system but challenges are also expected to be discussed.

“I hope that the community will have a better understanding of what’s happening in our schools,” said Strickland. “Hopefully this will help them be more willing to give donations, offer internship positions to students, and aid our schools.”

The event begins at 11:00 a.m. for attendees to view the expo portion on the event. At 11:45 a.m., lunch catered by Hickory Street Cafe will be served and at 12:00 p.m., spokespeople from both schools systems will address the audience on behalf of multiple organizations. Representatives from the Chamber stressed space is limited and reservations must be made by January 19. To reserve a $12 spot, call or email the Sylacauga Chamber of Commerce at (256) 249-0308 or [email protected]. The Sylacauga Board of Education is located at 43 North Broadway Avenue, Sylacauga, Al 35150.

Strickland said she hopes this will help students build public speaking skills while the community learns much more about the inner workings of schools within the Sylacauga area.
