Sycamore residents taking litter patrol into their own hands

SYCAMORE, Ala. – Picking up roadside litter has long been a passion for Sycamore residents Leon Carpenter and Ellen Turner.

“It’s time to take a stand,” said Carpenter. “And that’s why we’re making our rounds to every community in South Talladega County enlisting the help and support of elected officials, chambers of commerce, civic organizations, churches; anybody who is willing to stand up and help.”

Turner echoed his sentiments adding they have contacted the Alabama Department of Transportation, PALS, and others looking for help and support.

“We obviously need stronger anti-littering and dumping laws, but we also need the people to both take a stand and help clean up our area. We are very serious about doing whatever it takes to change a culture that has taken away our pride in where we live. We need your help!”

“When they stopped by the Greater Coosa Valley Chamber of Commerce this week, I was thrilled to hear what they are up to,” said Chamber President/CEO Tom Roberts. “We recently had members of Childersburg’s downtown revitalization committee gather for a long day of cleaning up and sprucing up and it’s going to take a lot more involvement. We have to get past talk and create more action to clean up, as well as to curb the increase in littering.”

Carpenter said they are looking to go into area schools with their anti-littering campaign. “We know that the people who have the most influence in changing the bad habits of our adults are our children,” said Carpenter. He said they are available to speak to any group too. “Look, like most folks, I hate talking in front of groups. But this is important, and we’re not going away until litter goes away!”
