Stidham; Lindsey speak to media as Auburn prepares for season opener

AUBURN, Ala. – The Auburn Tigers will kick-off the the 2017 season on Saturday versus Georgia Southern.

Over the weekend, Auburn’s new Offensive Coordinator Chip Lindsey had a chance to take the podium in front of local media. With a few minor changes to the offense, Lindsey, who was a coach at Auburn during the magical 2013 season, plans to coach from the sideline as opposed to the coaches booth.

“I think it’s very important to be on the sideline. You get the opportunity to see how he (Jarrett Stidham) is reacting to things. It’s a huge advantage to be able to that,” he explained. “I’ve done it both ways, and I’m fairly comfortable with either way.”

Stidham was recently named the starting quarterback for the Tigers after beating out last year’s starter Sean White. White led the Tigers to six straight wins after losing to the eventual national champion Clemson, but after his production slowed due to injury, Auburn fell to 8-5 as the season ended, including a blowout loss to Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.

Stidham has not played very much football, but he has all the tools a Gus Malzahn coached team could ask for. He impressed during his short stint at Baylor passing for nearly 1,300 yards and 12 touchdowns while throwing just two interceptions. He is a multi-dimensional QB who can run and pass, and quickly make decisions, which is every defensive coordinator’s nightmare.

Lindsey said he will call plays where Stidham will feel most comfortable. “The most important things is that he knows where to go with the ball in every situation,” he said. “I think it’s important as a coordinator to run what a guy feels good at.”

Stidham has not played an official snap of college football in almost two years. He sat out the 2016 season after transferring from Baylor while sexual assault allegations ran rampant through Art Briles’ program.

Stidham directly spoke on his relationship with his offensive coordinator saying, “He is really open to my ideas. We’re able to converse and pick each others brain a little bit. I like that about him, and it’s something I look forward to going into meetings everyday.”

The Tigers will kick the season off on Saturday night at 6:30 on the SEC Network.
