ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. – On Friday, Congressman Mike Rogers visited the Russell Lands corporate office in Alexander City to meet with Chariam and CEO of Russell Lands, Ben Russell himself, and many Russell Lands employees.

Rogers visit to Alexander City was triggered by the generosity of Russell Lands after the company gave $500 bonuses to employees in the wake of the recent tax cuts signed into law by the United States government. “As soon as I heard Russell Lands decided to do this I immediately called Ben [Russell] to tell him how proud I was,” Rogers stated.

“We were able to write Christmas checks to 500 employees, and our company was happy to give our employees what they have earned,”said Russell.

On his visit, Rogers awarded Russell and his company with a Congressional Record. “I’ve had a relationship with Russell Lands for years, and tremendous people work here. This acknowledges the leadership of this company and its decision to give a one-time $500 bonus to its employees,” Rogers said. “I thought this showed enormous leadership on the company’s behalf, and I wanted to come out and acknowledge that.”

Rogers held an open forum for discussion and questions in the Russell Lands corporate lobby where he explained the impact the tax cuts are having not only in Alabama, but also across the nation. “Over 95% of tax paying Americans are going to see relief under the new tax plan. You will start to see that on this month’s check,” Rogers said. He also explained how major corporations across the country are handling the tax cuts. He listed Walmart giving cash bonuses to employees and voluntarily raising minimum wage to $10 per-hour, and Disney, Starbucks and other major corporations giving bonuses to thousands of employees as direct beneficiaries of the government’s new tax plan. “Employers have wanted to do this for a while, and now they are able to because the government is out of their pocket book,” he said.

While at Russell Lands, Roger’s disputed the narrative that the new tax law was only benefiting the wealthy in the country. When asked how people can act negative towards the tax plan, Rogers said, “They just haven’t gotten their check yet with fewer with-holdings. Once February pay checks come out and people there is more in their paycheck, they’ll recognize this tax plan was for them too.”

With the tax plan in full force, Rogers can now move on towards his goals for 2018. Rogers first goal is to get the military properly funded as he serves on the armed forces committee. His second gal is to get the country moving forward on infrastructure improvement which includes the President Trump’s promised wall along the southern border of the nation.
