Qualification deadline passes; candidates prepare for federal, state, and county elections (UPDATED)

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Last Friday at 5:00 p.m. marked the qualification deadline for candidates in upcoming elections, and there’s now a long list involving federal, state, and county offices.

Five Republicans, including current Gov. Kay Ivey, and five Democrats are running for the governor’s seat.

State Senator Jim McClendon, who represents Talladega County in District 11, faces newcomer Jake Lane in the Republican contest. Democrat Carl Carter also seeks that position.

In State House District 33, Republican incumbent Ron Johnson of Sylacauga will face newcomer Ben Robbins of Talladega. Democrat Scott Brewer is also in that race.

Sylacauga native Jim Zeigler is running for a second term as State Auditor, facing two Republican competitors and one Democrat.

Congressman Mike Rogers is running for reelection in U.S. House District 3 with no Republican challenger. He will be up against Democrat Party candidates Mallory Hagan and Adia McClellan Winfrey.

Talladega County Sheriff Jimmy Kilgore is seeking reelection and will face Democrat candidate Bill Coker.

Republicans Mark Nelson and Jackie Swinford have competition from Democrat Vann Caldwell for Probate Judge.

Statewide, offices on the ballot will include seven seats in the U.S. House of Representatives as well as Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Auditor, Secretary of State, Treasurer, Commissioner of Agriculture & Industries, the State Senate, the State House of Representatives, three seats on the Court of Criminal Appeals, three seats on the Court of Civil Appeals, two places on the Public Service Commission, four seats on the State Board of Education, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and three Associate Justices, various Circuit Court and District Court Judge seats, and various county offices.

The primary election is June 5 with a July 17 runoff date. The statewide general election is Nov. 6.
