SYLACAUGA, Ala. – What do Bo Jackson, John Croyle, Hank Williams, Mia Hamm, Courteney Cox, and Condoleezza Rice have in common?
They are all famous Alabamians who were at the 12th Annual Wax Museum Tuesday at Pinecrest Elementary School.
More than ten years ago, teachers Patty Richardson and Tina Fleaman first created Pinecrest’s Wax Museum as a fun way to include fourth grade English, reading, speaking, and social studies standards into their curriculum. The goal was to engage students in a fun, creative project.
After students conducted research on a famous Alabamian, they wrote a short biography, made a poster, and created Google slides to present to their classmates. As the final part of their project, students impersonated their favorite Alabamian in the Pinecrest Wax Museum. Students stand still in a line with a ‘button’ and props. When visitors approach, they interact with the students who come alive. When their presentation is complete, they return to their mute state.
“Our school staff and the community look forward to this event every year,” said assistant principal Mrs. Julie Green. “The students work hard and are so creative. We learn about someone new each year.”
