Operation Southern Shield to unite law enforcement in traffic safety campaign

SHARE NOW

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Law enforcement agencies in Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, and Tennessee are joining the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency in a coordinated effort to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities in the southeast by ensuring motorists are obeying basic highway safety laws.

ADECA today announced “Operation Southern Shield”, which, from July 17-23, will focus on motorists who speed, are not wearing a seatbelt, or are impaired or distracted while driving — the major factors in automobile accidents and deaths. ALEA and police and sheriffs’ departments will step up efforts to provide high-visibility of law enforcement and take unsafe drivers off the road.

“Summer is a time when families come together for fun, not funerals,” said ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell. “Gov. Ivey and ADECA wholeheartedly endorse this effort and urge drivers to at all times to slow down, wear your seatbelts, and pay attention to the road.”

With a goal of zero fatalities, this short campaign recognizes the high volume of traffic resulting from summer traveling and vacations. Through ADECA, a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will pay project overtime.
