New Sylacauga City Council and Mayor sworn into office

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga Council Chambers were packed with standing room only Monday morning as an entirely new City Council and Mayor were sworn into office.

Ashton Fowler (District 1), Tiffany Nix (District 2), Donnie Blackmon (District 3), Lee Perryman (District 4), Dallas Davenport (District 5) and Mayor Jim Heigl were installed in front of friends, family members, and citizens. Judge Barry Vaughn administered the instillation.

Among the audience members were former council members including Joe Hogan, Shannon Darby, Tom Roberts, Rocky Lucas. Former Mayor Doug Murphree welcomed the crowd and wished the council members good luck.

After a reception inside City Hall, the first organizational meeting of the new Council was held. The meeting began by Blackmon stating desired a yearly term for the position of Council President then proceeded to nominate Perryman for the seat. The vote was unanimous.

“I am excited about the opportunity to serve and look forward to getting started this afternoon,” said Perryman. “We on the City Council are excited about this opportunity to make a difference for Sylacauga.”

Fowler was selected as President Pro Tempore.

All remaining items on the agenda were passed unanimously including reappointments of city positions for public defenders and ratification of existing depositories of all public funds and monies of the City. The meeting lasted less than 15 minutes.

The next work session will be held Monday, Nov. 14 at 5:00 p.m.
