SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Kiara Cunningham did not expect to wake up with branches in her bedroom.
Unfortunately, Monday afternoon, that happened when a massive oak tree on the side of her house split in half and collapsed on her home off East 5th Street.
“I was asleep. I thought it was a tornado out here,” said Cunningham. “I woke up and half of the roof was gone. I got up and ran out of the house then I came outside and saw the tree on top of the house.”
Cunningham said she was the only person inside at the time and was not hurt. Her brother, who was nearby, called 911.
Firefighters said the incident was caused by excessive winds in the area. No power was lost at adjacent houses and utilities were turned off. The City’s Street Department will assess the damage.
