SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Do you have a child who is twelve years old or younger and loves to fish? If so, June 17 is a day to mark on your calendar.

The Sylacauga Chamber of Commerce will once again host this year’s annual youth fishing derby at scenic Lake Howard in Sylacauga.”The event is a great opportunity for kids to spend time with their parents or grandparents while enjoying the sport of fishing,” said interim executive director of the Sylacauga Chamber of Commerce Laura Strickland. “It may inspire one to take on fishing as a hobby.”

Strickland said Sylacauga is fortunate to have a outdoor space like Lake Howard. “Anytime we can bring our own citizens to this area to enjoy an event, we bring more awareness to the opportunities that exist in our backyard,” she said.

On Friday, June 16, friends of the South Talladega County ARC will participate in their own fishing derby. Community volunteers, along with Outdoor Friends Forever, The Forest Rangers, and the State of Alabama Game Wardens, will be on hand.

There will be many special guests attending this event including Smokey the Bear, MainStreet Urgent Care’s Dr. Waggs, and 98.3’s Fox to enjoy the fishing as well. Prizes will be given to the children throughout the morning as well as hometown Blue Bell Ice Cream. There will also be an inflatable slide for the kids to enjoy.

Participating with the Sylacauga Chamber of Commerce, the event is also sponsored by and supported with donations from businesses in the community including Wal-Mart, Blue Bell, MainStreet Urgent Care, Marble City Media, and Allen Oil Companies.

The event will be held on June 17, registration will be from 7-8 a.m. Fishing will begin promptly at 8 and end at noon. Children 12 years of age and younger are invited to participate, but must be accompanied by a parent. Loaner rods will be limited, so all participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing poles.
