Childersburg City Council approves lease program for five new police vehicles

CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – The Childersburg City Council had a short but important agenda for their Sept. 19 meeting, voting to approve Resolution 2017-18 which authorizes Mayor Ken Wesson to procure a lease/purchase agreement from the state bid list for five new police vehicles. After a three-year lease term, the City would be able to purchase the vehicles for $1.00 each. The final cost will be determined during a planned visit to Stivers Ford in Montgomery.

Resolution 2017-19 was also approved and authorized the Mayor to enter into a five-year agreement between Coca-Cola and the Childersburg Parks & Recreation Department. Coke will supply scoreboards for various athletic facilities and will have exclusive product sale rights at those locations.

In other action, the Council gave approval for Tommy Chamberlain to attend the Annual Ambulance Convention held at Orange Beach from Sept. 26-28, allocated $975 to the Historic Preservation Commission for new Christmas decorations, and approved payment of invoices in the amount of $178,558.16.

During the Town Hall portion of the meeting, Mayor Ken Wesson introduced Miranda Brunn, a junior at Childersburg High School who is serving as a Chamber Ambassador.

Wesson made several appeals to the public, first asking that citizens refrain from mixing waste streams for roadside pick-up. “When limbs and other yard waste is mixed with rubbish, it becomes both expensive and cumbersome for our crews to separate them to avoid heavy landfill fees,” Wesson said.

Wesson also asked that citizens help report inoperable street lights. “There is a metal tag on each pole with a number. If you will please call 256-378-5521 and report them so that we can get them fixed as the days are starting to get shorter.”

Monty Powell reported that the Childersburg Historical Committee is going all out this year with lights and decorations, especially along Alabama Highway 76 in the downtown area. “We anticipate literally hundreds of thousands of visitors for the Christmas in the Pines and want to put our best foot forward when they come through our City,” he said.

Mayor Wesson said that he is continuing talks with Talladega County officials on the creation of a “safe swap” zone with a 24-hour camera.

The next regular meeting of the Council will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 3, at 6:00 p.m.
