[CAUTION] Tips to keep you safe as heat index rises

SHARE NOW

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Temperatures continue to rise as summer is in full swing in the state of Alabama.

If you had a nickel for every time you heard the phrase “it’s hot,” you would probably be a millionaire by collecting those nickels just in the last few weeks.

As summer rolls on, do not expect it to get any cooler. According to SylacaugaNews.com weather, temperatures are expected to reach 95 degrees in the coming days.

While 95 degrees sounds survivable, the actual temperature will not be the issue. 98.3 WFXO meteorologist Dan Holiday said the heat index will make the weather quite uncomfortable. According to Holiday, temperatures will feel as if they are topping 100 degrees today and Friday and there is a chance the heat index may reach 105 degrees.

The high humidity level that causes the change in how hot the air actually feels can be dangerous if people do not keep an eye on their body. Holiday shared these tips to help keep you safe:

  1. For those who work outside, avoid dehydration. Holiday said to drink up to 3.7 liters of water per day (.9 gallons). It may seem like more than normal, but is essential when it is this warm. People with medical conditions like diabetes, heart disease and cystic fibrosis are at greatest risk for dehydrating.
  2. For those who do not have air conditioners, use fans. Even in the home the heat can have an effect on the human body.
  3. DO NOT leave pets or children in the car. This one is obvious, but many animals and children are killed each year because they were left in a vehicle. Do not do this even if the windows are rolled down.
  4. Avoid alcohol and liquor.
  5. Schedule outdoor tasks earlier or later in the day.
  6. Wear plenty of sunscreen.
  7. Encourage employees and co-workers to take breaks.

The heat wave will last through Friday, but temperatures in the 90s may be here to stay.
