Autism awareness run scheduled for City of Sylacauga

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – No matter who you are, there is a chance you or someone you are close to has been affected by autism spectrum disorder (ASD). According to the Center for Disease Control, ASD affects all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups, but boys are four times more likely to suffer from ASD as opposed to girls.

A diagnosis of ASD now includes several conditions that used to be diagnosed separately: autistic disorder, pervasive developmental disorder, and Asperger syndrome. These conditions are now all called autism spectrum disorder.

CDC studies show that the disorder is becoming more and more prevalent every year. In 2000, one in very 150 children were diagnosed with ASD. Six years later that number grew to one in every 110, and as of 2012 CDC studies show one in every 68 children has ASD.

Soon, there will be an opportunity for you to help raise awareness and donations for the disorder that causes significant social, communication, and behavioral challenges in children. The Walk for Autism and 5K Race to Solve the Puzzle will be held in Sylacauga on April 1 at 7:30 a.m. at Blue Bell Park.

The walk and run will take place at the same time, but the registration process is different. The walk costs $30 and the run costs $35. You can register yourself or a group for both the walk and run here.
