SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Hundreds from Sylacauga and the surrounding communities attended the Second Annual MainStreet ‘Bark in the Park‘ at Noble Park on Saturday.

Although rain was in the forecast for most of the day, the showers held off, allowing for a day of family fun and animal adoptions. The four-hour event sponsored by MainStreet Family Urgent Care, SylacaugaNews.com, Yea!106.5, 98.3 Fox FM, Sylacauga Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Sylacauga, was a benefit for the Sylacauga Animal Shelter. Multiple animals found new loving and caring families, but this was also an opportunity for those in the community to discover various ways they can volunteer and help the shelter.

The shelter runs near full capacity daily, and the staff cannot do the work alone. Connie Willette, the kennel technician at the shelter, told SylacaugaNews.com she was excited about the numerous people searching for volunteer opportunities.

“This event brought everyone out and gave the community a chance to see what we do at the Sylacauga Animal Shelter,” Willette explained. “Many people stopped by and inquired about volunteering. The day was a success.”

The day was very interactive for those visiting the event. It featured raffle drawings, an animal costume contest, and was headlined by a 1-mile fun run where community members were able to walk the animals around the Nobel Park track. Vendors lined the park as well, selling goods and services to those attending.

Children may have had more fun than anyone at the park. They were able to enjoy multiple inflatables, train rides around the track, and every child’s favorite snack, snow-cones.

Sponsors were pleased with the success for Saturday’s event. “Our organization was very proud to partner with many great local bushiness,” said Michael Brannon. Brannon is the Managing Editor of SylacaugaNews.com and Director of Business Development of Marble City Media. “Community engagement and volunteers are vital to the success of the Sylacauga Animal Shelter. We were expectant for a great turnout from the community and they did not disappoint.”

“I am absolutely thrilled with the turnout for the second Annual MainStreet Bark in the Park,” said Kelly Hamm, the community educator for Main Street Family Urgent Care. “While I don’t have an exact number, after speaking with our vendors, we estimate around 700 people came out to enjoy the day at Noble Park on Saturday.  This could not have been accomplished without the support of our community. When I began brainstorming ways to make this year’s event more successful than last, I decided to reach out to some community partners who I knew would want to be involved. Laura [Strickland] at the Chamber, Jayne [McGee] and Shannon [Plexico] at the City, and Lee Perryman and Michael Brannon with Marble City Media all immediately jumped on board to volunteer their time and make this event a success. Those community partners turned into our “Presenting Sponsors” and with their help we were able to raise $2,230 for the Sylacauga Animal Shelter.  It was truly a wonderful experience to have the support of a community of leaders. We are excited about the final result of this year, and are already taking notes on how to make it even more successful next year.”
