Winner of the 1960 Tony Award for Best Play, The Miracle Worker by William Gibson, tells the story of Annie Sullivan and her blind, deaf, and mute student Helen Keller. The Miracle Worker dramatizes the volatile relationship between the lonely, dedicated teacher and her violent, spoiled pupil. Helen is trapped in a secret, silent world unable to communicate with her family, but Annie realizes that there is a mind and spirit there waiting to be rescued from a dark and tortured silence. With scenes of intense physical and emotional activity, Annie’s success with Helen finally comes with the utterance of a single glorious word, “water.”
