Day in the Life: City Councilman Ashton Fowler

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – From serving as the Distribution Supervisor for Blue Bell Creameries to interacting with constituents, a day in the life of Sylacauga City Councilman Ashton Fowler is always filled with excitement. Being a Sylacauga native, Fowler is no stranger to the Marble City.

SylacaugaNews.com talked to Fowler about his typical day, in what he describes as routine and schedule-oriented.

Fowler’s days typically begin at 4:00 a.m., arriving at work by 4:30 a.m. Fowler said he enjoys the short commute from his home in Taylor Estates to work, only about three miles. Upon arriving at Blue Bell, he typically is in charge of making coffee for the office then checks his works e-mails. He then holds routine checks on Blue Bell drivers, ensuring each shipment is pace for a timely and scheduled delivery.

As the morning progresses, Fowler continuously checks on all drivers in order to keep track of alternate travel routes or other traffic variables. The Department of Transportation also consumes a large portion of Fowler’s workday, as he ensures each driver and the company stay in accordance with its regulations.

Aside from checking in on the actual distribution process, Fowler oversees all forms of safety training and manufacturing processes. This role consists of giving presentation to company workers.

Fowler’s typical workday winds down much earlier than most, ending at 2:30 p.m. After getting off work, Fowler heads straight to Snap Fitness to work out for anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes.

After a trip to the gym, Fowler’s day transitions to serving the people of Sylacauga’s first district. Fowler typically communicates with constituents who have voiced concerns or have filed complaints. Fowler often travels to the locations of a complaint was filed, meets face-to-face with constituents, or checks back to ensure that a previous issue has been resolved.

Fowler also visits the sites of many city projects to check the construction or renovation progress.

When Fowler wraps up city business, he returns home and takes his dogs outside for a 30-to-45 minute walk. He and his wife, Sally, then eat dinner, most of which is pre-prepared from a meal prep program in which the two participate. After dinner, Fowler tends to landscaping around his home.

To wind down after a typical day, Fowler and his wife watch a TV series or a popular sports game, then head to bed no later than 9:30 p.m.
